Ghenet

284 Mulberry Street, (between Houston and Prince streets), New York, NY 10012

This friendly Ethiopian restaurant is thoroughly accommodating to its mostly non-African clientele. They provide silverware if desired (although this is not customary with Ethiopian cuisine) and offer some less spicy dishes. The menu features exotic choices of vegetable, beef and chicken dishes. The food is generally hot and spicy and eaten with a spongy, pancake-like bread called injera, which is used to wrap around everything and finally soak up the hot berbere sauce. Doro-wot is a popular dish of chicken marinated in berbere and served tender and spicy.
