The University of Pennsylvania was founded by Benjamin Franklin and others in 1740. America's first medical school and first collegiate business school, the Wharton, were established here in the 19th century.
The campus also includes the University's Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Irvine and Annenberg theaters, a museum about ENIAC (the first electronic computer, built here) and an ice rink, all open to the public.
All twelve of the University's graduate and professional schools share a 262-acre campus in West Philadelphia, encouraging horizontal collaboration among undergraduate programs and individually-designed majors that draw on coursework from several schools. This is a private, co-educational Ivy League Institution. The University is a charter member of the Ivy Group and is ranked among the finest comprehensive universities in the world.
On the third Thursday of the month, the campus museums stay open late and have small receptions for folks stopping by after work.
